What is MLC 2006 & what does it mean for crew?

The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 took effect for all commercial yachts on 20th August 2014. This directive is to ensure seafarers are protected whilst working aboard and to ensure they understand their rights. It is strongly advised that private yachts also follow the requirements.

Issues such as hours of rest, contracts, health insurance, and repatriation are detailed in this document and it only comes into effect once employed aboard a compliant yacht.

Hemisphere Monaco provides guidance for superyachts to ensure full compliance with the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (“MLC”). To review the full convention, please click here: And for frequently asked questions click here

At Hemisphere Monaco we monitor our systems to ensure we comply with the MLC 2006 convention by:

  • Requesting crew contracts to be issued prior to embarkation, providing the opportunity for crew to review and seek advice, prior to signing.
  • All crew who are employed by Hemisphere Monaco directly, will receive MLC 2006 compliant contracts in sufficient time, to review prior to embarkation.
  • Maintaining an up to date, confidential database of all seafarers employed or placed by Hemisphere Monaco.
  • Ensuring we do not charge seafarers for our services; they are completely free of charge.
  • Informing seafarers of any ancillary costs they may incur themselves during employment, such as: visa expenses, certificate revalidation costs, additional training investment and passport renewals.
  • We do not operate a black list or the like to prevent or deter seafarers gaining employment.
  • We do not recruit or employ any seafarers under the age of 18.
  • We require certain documents from crew members upon registration, to be uploaded via our secure online crew portal.
  • Medical certificate, written in English and stipulating sight, hearing and colour vision are satisfactory. This can only be issued by a duly authorised medical practitioner.
  • Passport copy
  • The 5 Basic STCW modules
